Healthline describes maladaptive daydreaming as intense daydreaming that distracts a person from their real life. It is different from the hallucinations caused by schizophrenia, a medical condition that’s also about misplaced thoughts, feelings and behaviours. As the name of the condition suggests, I am daydreaming perpetually. ‘Time, Space, and Potatoes’ is a poem in which I recount my experiences as a maladaptive daydreamer. I do, I call myself an avid daydreamer, and apparently, it’s also a condition. Damilola Bajo describes her experience with maladaptive daydreaming through her poetry.ĭid you ever dream with open eyes? Did you dream while studying, doing chores, socialising or watching something? People affected by this condition tend to tap their versions of the imaginative, often submitting to it in times of distress, grief and loneliness. Maladaptive dreaming involves a lot of daydreaming with very little interference from reality.
